To the Editor: Regarding the acting chief of Bush’s Office of Legal Counsel’s horrendous definition of “illegal torture” --as if there were legal torture -- as that which causes pain both “severe and lasting” (February 17, 2008; A03): putting aside torture that does not cause severe life-long pain (presumably, John McCain’s torture pains are no longer severe), it is grotesque that unnamed GOP lawmakers defended suffocation by water as not truly torture by citing “programs by the U.S. military th… Continue

Dear Congressman Delahunt: “The practice of waterboarding and other acts of torture not only violate our fundamental American values, but have been proven to be ineffective techniques of interrogation,” Delahunt said. “The Congress is now speaking with one voice in making it clear that the American people, acting through their representatives in Washington, will not tolerate the use of torture." This is hilarious! As you well know, torture was already a crime when he ordered it. He committed a… Continue

NYT essay calls torture a crime, but note the blame-spreading word in the title -- "we" To the Editor: I am outraged by the title of Kristof's essay, “When We Torture” (Feb. 14, Op-Ed). It implies that we who have been rendered powerless are complicit in this crime . Who shall hold Bush accountable when the only word dirtier, more unspeakable, more unprintable, more disgusting, more foul, more devastating, more terrifying than torture is [-deleted-]? Bush tortures, Congress complies, your pap… Continue

Feb 15, 2008 Dear Senator Kennedy: As you may know, torture, like several other tyrant-related activities Mr. Bush has ordered, was already against the law when he ordered it. Wouldn't it make more sense to call him to account for breaking the old law than to write a new one for him to ignore? What's next? A law abolishing slavery? Better hurry, avoid the rush! Have you passed a law giving women the right to vote? Because I'd like to vote against a few people that need to get out of DC pront… Continue

Nancy Pelosi was entrusted with the responsibility of ending the war and took an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. The war rages on and Nancy has refused to hold those accountable for this immoral war based on lies. Cindy for Congress is asking the country to stand up against injustice and stand with Cindy Sheehan again on August 6th
August 6th is Hiroshima Day. Hiroshima is a vivid example of the potential destruction US Foreign policy can bring to people all around the world. The USA is the only country to ever have used a Nuclear weapon in battle. It's time to stop!
We must hold the administration that led us into an unjust immoral war based on lies accountable.
August 6th is also the third anniversary of the day Cindy Sheehan first sat down in the ditch outside of George W Bush’s Crawford, Texas ranch to get him to answer the question, “For what noble cause,” did he send her son Casey to die in Iraq!
Stand with Cindy again on August 6th!
August 6th can be the beginning of a shift in paradigm from policies of fear, murder and destruction toward a consciousness that fosters policies of trade, sovereignty, self-determination, cooperation and peace
Let’s make August 6th a day to let Nancy Pelosi know that we, as a nation are serious about peace and holding those accountable who do not stand with us
You don't have to live in the 8th District of California to see that Nancy Pelosi is not interested in PEACE or ACCOUNTABILITY and you have a stake in Cindy’s race for Congress! The nation is affected by Nancy Pelosi’s actions and the nation can send Nancy a message by contributing to Cindy Sheehan for Congress on August 6th
Let’s money bomb the PEACE MOM, Cindy Sheehan on August 6th

How's it goin'? U still abroad?
THIS WEEK, if you read this, please consider forwarding this flyer with anyone you think might distribute same / take action in the States!
Peace,
Pat
> striking here wouldn't do much for there.
Yeah--wasn't sure if you were still in Beijing. Meant to also write, "Please email any contacts you have residing in the States. And any online lists you belong to which may be read by Americans."
> I will send yet another letter to everyone.
Thanks! This time date (May 1) is set and a big union (ILWU) has already notified Pacific dockworkers and transport workers [these 3 unions are actually international, but I doubt it's within our power to get unions abroad to strike May 1 to protest the U.S.'s war on Iraq--might only hurt their people, not ours?] plus the AFL-CIO and the 7 unions comprising Change-to-Win (incl truck drivers at ports).
> Read a few days a go that Conyers said he couldn't have it on his conscience if impeaching led to a McCain win.
Guess he thinks any non-Democrat president is a fate worse than an end to freedom amd democracy.
John, John, John... You should read this opinion that Republicans are already planning (and having wet dreams) to do "whatever it takes" to coronate another of their own (McCain)--"Republicans Plan Double-Whammy"--and that the ONLY way to stop *them* (and/or their corporate puppeteers) IS impeachment.
Please read my post about the MAY 1st strike!

If you agree (please feel free to comment!), let everyone you know become aware... THIS is our (last?) chance--for impeachment, for ending the occupation of Iraq, AT LEAST for forcing our topics into the presidential campaigns!
Defending Freedom through National Solidarity!

The link I gave on the votes was from the NYTimes, link that does not work anymore..However, Ys Obam voted against, but correct me if I am wrong: are not Senators required to be present for voting? Obam did vote against previoulsy as stated below:
Among the presidential contenders, Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona, voted in favor of the final measure, while the two Democrats, Senator Barack Obama of Illinois and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, did not vote. Obama did oppose immunity on a key earlier motion to end debate. Clinton, campaigning in Texas, issued a statement saying she would have voted to oppose the final measure.
